NATIONAL STUTTERING ASSOCIATION
Did you know that: -- There are three million people who stutter (of all ages, races, genders, etc....).
-- Stuttering is influenced by behavioral factors but is NOT caused by an emotional/psychological problem or nervous disorder.
-- Stuttering is not caused by nervousness, talking too fast, being unintelligent, not knowing what to say, etc.
-- There are many different degrees (mild to severe) and patterns of stuttering.
-- Stuttering normally begins between ages 2 to 5, tends to run in families & affects more men than women.
-- Many young children who stutter outgrow their speaking difficulty.
-- There is no single cause of stuttering, but current research is exploring the connections between stuttering and the neurological coordination of speech.
-- Stuttering is not the direct fault of the family nor the child or adult who stutters.
-- There is a National Organization (NSA) as well as support groups for people who stutter.
What is the National Stuttering Association (NSA)?
The NSA is a non-profit organization formed in 1977 that is dedicated to bringing hope, dignity, support, education, and empowerment to children and adults who stutter. The NSA has over 3,000 members nationwide and operates a volunteer network of over 80 local support groups.
